Bute-bute

Bute-bute revisits the shoes that dance, in a humorous choreography based on everyday gestures and others, performed to the sound of J. S. Bach's Suite No. 3. In 1991, together with two pieces by three other choreographers (Me Myself and Influências, by Aldara Bizarro, and Bimarginário, by Mónica Lapa and Francisco Camacho), Bute-bute was part of a choreography program produced by the group Criatura, presented in Oeiras and Vila Franca de Xira (Portugal).

In 2002, Sílvia Real and Francisco Camacho reunited for a presentation of Bute-bute at the Teatro Municipal Maria Matos, included in homage program dedicated to Mónica Lapa (1965-2001).

Francisco Camacho recalls this early collaboration with Sílvia Real as follows:

After the premiere of Bimarginário, in 1990, my late co-creator Mónica Lapa suggested us to dance in a program with two more choreographies, a solo by Aldara Bizarro and a duet by Sílvia Real. As we were in the early days of contemporary dance in Portugal, the idea of touring was bold. But that was what this program was intended for and, to achieve that, it was necessary to reduce costs as much as possible. The ideal solution was for me to dance Sílvia’s Bute-bute with her, and that's what happened! The show required me to keep in unison with Sílvia, having to follow a movement entirely marked out to the millimetre according to the counts of Bach's score, and to do several circles in a row, all of which are feats I was never skilled at. Fortunately, it was the first choreography of the program and, while Aldara performed, I caught my breath and prepared myself for the duet with Mónica, in which I had more room for improvisation, to let myself go with the inspiration of the moment, having already overcome the stimulating challenge of Bute-bute.

Who would have thought that once freed from that pair of boots, my steps and Sílvia's would cross paths again and again, in a carousel of collaborations, which is still now taking on new forms. Bute [Let’s do it]? Bute! Here we go again.
