o eco do eco
[Eco’s echo]
Echo's echo by Sílvia Real & Sérgio Pelágio commissioned by Encontros ACARTE festival presented at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, September 1999

The main inspiration for this show was anthropophagy. It had been the theme of the 24th São Paulo Art Biennial and we didn't hesitate in embracing the idea as well. We were interested in approaching anthropophagy from the perspective described by journalist Iza de Salles Freaza in an article published in the newspaper Expresso (14.02.1998) about said Biennial: "But before eating the meat they took out the bones, right? (asked a student from one of the many schools that visited the exhibition daily). (...) there is no doubt that cannibalism, which has contaminated all of humanity's production – history, customs, arts – has such deep roots in the unconscious that, in the blink of an eye, in the mind of a child, a man can be transformed into a delicious boneless chicken stew.
