Sérgio Pelágio
Sérgio was born in Lisbon and began his musical studies on classical guitar at the age of 12. He later discovered Jazz and improvised music and played, among others, with David Liebman, Andy Sheppard, Graham Haynes, Frank Lacy, Norma Winston, John Abercrombie, Sylvia Cuenca, Mário Franco, Bernardo Sassetti, and Mário Laginha – with whom he recorded the album Hoje (Farol Música Ltd., 1994).

In 1992, he formed the group Idefix and released the CD Idefix live (Miso Records, 1992). He works regularly as a composer for dance, having collaborated with the choreographers Paulo Ribeiro, Paula Massano (in Anteros, o Amante Visual [ANO?]), João Galante and Teresa Prima (in O Céu Fica Por Cima [ANO?]), Vera Mantero (in Sob, 1993; Different Skies, Different Clouds [ANO?]; Para Enfastiadas e Profundas Tristezas, 1994 – awarded with the 1996 Bagnolet Prize), Francisco Camacho (in Desperdícios, 1988; Quatro e Um Quarto, 1991; Auto-retrato [ANO?]; Primeiro Nome: Le, 1994 – awarded with the 1994/95 Acarte/Maria Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão Prize; Gust, 1997; My Name Is Wilde... Oscar Wilde, 2001; Silence So Sexy, 2002; Andiamo!, 2012; E Pur Si Muove, 2014; VelhⒶs, 2019), e Sílvia Real (in Natasha, 1995; Pour Bien, 1995; Road Movie, 1996).
In 1997, Sérgio founded the association Produções Real Pelágio with Sílvia Real. The duo co-created the trilogy Casio Tone (1997), Subtone (2003) and Tritone (2013), as well as the shows Assim Vai o Mundo (Festival Mergulho no Futuro, Expo 98), O Eco do Eco (Encontros Acarte/ FCG 1999), Handy #23 (Festival Citemor, 2001), Solo Para Dois Intérpretes (Centro Cultural de Belém, 2002). Their work has been presented in Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Slovenia, UK, Ireland, Hungary, Brazil, and the USA.
In 2002, Sérgio released Bandas Sonoras Para Peças de Francisco Camacho e Vera Mantero 1993-97 (2002, Miso Records).
He plays regularly with double-bassist Mário Franco, with whom he recorded the CD Our Door, featuring Mário Franco Trio (TOAP/OJM, 2014) and Rush, featuring Mário Franco Quintet (Nischo Records, 2017).
In 2009, Sérgio created the project for children Histórias Magnéticas (henceforth presented in Portugal, Macau, Timor, Spain, Cape Verde, and Japan), having more recently released its CD compilation, also entitled Histórias Magnéticas (2018, Boca – Palavras que Alimentam).
Sérgio’s music featured in films by Rita Nunes, Paulo Abreu, and Bruno de Almeida.
In 2021, he presented his most recent solo work in concert for the first time (Festival Verão Azul, Lagos), following which he released the CD RIFF OUT (Real Pelágio, 2022), as well as the graphic novel entitled Não se Deixem Enganar! – Um Conto Panfletário, illustrated by João Pedro Gomes, also published in 2022 by Real Pelágio.
